The world will tomorrow mark International Albinism Awareness Day—a special day reserved for increasing awareness about albinism and ending discrimination. This year’s theme, “Still Standing Strong”, acknowledges that the albinism community continues to remain united despite the challenges they encounter—and those challenges are many.

Albinism, a genetic condition that reduces the amount of melanin in a person’s skin, hair and eyes, results in visual impairment. A lack of pigmentation means that persons living with albinism are more susceptible to sunburn and skin cancer. In some parts of the world, persons with albinism also live in fear of discrimination, or worse.
